Five ways your website could look. Pick the one that feels like the shop.

Every direction below has the same content, the same photos, and the same shop. They differ in one thing only: what greets somebody who has never been to Haiku. Read them, argue about them, then tell us a letter.

What this is

Design directions, not a finished site. Nothing here is built yet. Choosing is free and changing your mind now costs nothing.

Who it is for

The visitor deciding this morning whether to stop at mile marker 1, and the one who got home to Denver and wants another one of your bowls.

On the page

Your story, the makers, the work, the cafe, hours and directions, click to call, and a shop that hands checkout to the Square you already run.

About the prices

The only prices shown are the ones written on your shelf card. Everything else is left blank on purpose until we build the catalog together.

You already named yourselves. It is on the glass in gold letters and it is better than anything we would have invented.

This direction takes the plantation building itself as the palette. The pale butter yellow of the siding, the charcoal window trim, the teak of the lanai chairs, the red dirt in the drive. Nothing invented, nothing borrowed from a stock template.

The page opens on the porch, because that is the first thing anyone actually sees. Then the sentence that explains what this place is, then the four facts a driver needs before they commit to pulling over. Everything else is underneath.

Of the five, this is the warmest and the most obviously local. It is also the safest choice, in the good sense: it will still look right in five years, because it is just a picture of who you already are.

Walk in and the walls are white and the floor is pale and every single colour in the room is something one of you made. That is a design system already.

This direction refuses to add anything. No background colour, no ornament, no decorative type. The page is a white wall and the work hangs on it, captioned the way a gallery captions, with the maker and the medium in small type underneath.

It is the most confident of the five and the one that most flatters the objects. A koa bowl, a silk scarf and one of Tai's waves all look more expensive against white than against cream. That matters if you want people buying prints and not just cookies.

The risk is temperature. This is a cool, quiet room. Reviewers keep using the word aloha about you, and a white gallery does not say aloha on its own. It would need the writing and the faces to carry the warmth.

  • Needs the best photography of the five. Good news: you have a professional in the family.
  • Scales best as you add makers or seasons, because the grid just grows.
  • Coldest of the five. Would live or die on the writing.

The Makers

People first. The shop is the setting, the family is the story, and every object is signed by whoever made it.

Nothing in this shop came from somewhere else. Every single thing here was made by somebody you can meet.

Come in for coffee, stay because the person who made the scarf might be the one who hands it to you.

Every other shop on that road sells things somebody else made. You are the only one where the maker might hand you your coffee.

This direction puts that at the centre. Four named makers, four columns, each with the work and a short paragraph in their own register. The objects are still for sale, but you buy them knowing whose hands they came out of.

It is the most defensible position commercially. A resin box is a resin box on a shelf in Lahaina. A resin box made by the family of a Pipeline surf photographer, in a farm shop at mile marker one, is a story somebody retells when a guest asks about it.

It asks the most from you: a real line about each maker, and ideally a portrait of each. That is the only extra homework in the five.

Somebody is in a rental car in Paia right now deciding whether the road to Hana is worth it. This page is aimed straight at them.

Route marker green, heavy uppercase, and the practical answers pinned to the top: are you open, where exactly, what is the phone number, can I park. The design borrows from highway signage on purpose, because that is the visual language of the drive they are already on.

This is the highest converting of the five for foot traffic, and by some distance. It is also the least precious. Nothing here is trying to be a gallery. It is trying to get a car into your lot before ten in the morning.

The honest trade: it undersells the art. A wave print by a Volcom photographer deserves better than a highway sign. If you pick D we would want the shop pages underneath to switch into something quieter.

You have a professional surf photographer in the family and his work is already the biggest thing on your walls. This direction stops treating that as a detail.

Near black, full bleed, and the wave carries the top of the page. Everything else is set small and quiet underneath, the way a print shop or a good surf brand would do it. The shop row is the only place colour appears, and it comes from the products.

This is the most premium looking of the five and the one most likely to sell a large print at a real price. It is also the one that looks least like a farm shop, which may be exactly the point or exactly the problem.

The three prices shown here are the ones from the card on your skincare shelf. They are the only real prices we have, so they are the only ones on this board.

Choosing

You do not have to agree on all of it. Pick a letter, or point at the pieces you want from two. Blending is normal and costs nothing at this stage.

If you want our recommendation

D, Mile Marker One, is where we would start. It is aimed at the person who is deciding right now whether to pull over, and that is the job the site has to do first. It is also the direction that carries the shop, the cafe and the art without any of them fighting each other.

E, Aqua Therapy, is our second. It is the better looking page and it would sell Tai's prints at real prices. It just asks more of the photography, and it looks less like a farm shop than you might want on day one.

These two also blend well. D at the top for the driver, E's darker treatment on the prints section underneath. If the family lands there, say so and we will build it that way.

A
Family Farm Shop
Choose this if the sign on the window is already the right answer and you want the site to feel like the porch.
B
The Gallery Wall
Choose this if you want the work to look as good online as it does on a white wall, and you are comfortable with quiet.
C
The Makers
Choose this if the thing worth selling is that one family made all of it, and you are willing to write two sentences each.
D
Mile Marker One
Choose this if the job of the site is to get a car into the lot, and everything else is secondary.
E
Aqua Therapy
Choose this if you want to sell Tai's prints at real prices and you are happy for the ocean to lead.
Then

Notes happen here on this board first, not in the real site. We only build once a direction is approved the way you want it.

Photos

Everything on this board is a photo from the shop, cleaned up and cropped. Nothing is stock. We will want Tai's originals at full size for whichever direction wins.

The shop

Checkout runs on the Square you already use, so money lands where it lands today. What we need to settle Monday is who builds the catalog.

Timing

About ten working days from the day you pick, with one round of changes in the middle. The full run is laid out below.

What happens after you pick

The clock does not run on calendar days, it runs on how fast the four things in the right hand column reach us. Everything else is on us.

01You pick a directionA letter is enough. Blending two is fine. This is the only thing we are waiting on right now.You
02We write the copyHeadline, your story, the makers, the cafe, the shop. Written from what you tell us, so you are never staring at a blank page.Us, 2 to 3 days
03We build the pageThe chosen direction becomes a real page on a private link, with your photos cleaned up and cropped.Us, 5 working days from content
04You review itThe whole family looks at the real thing, not a picture of it. One round of changes is included. You
05We launchLive on halehakumaui.com, search listing set up, and we hand you the keys.Us, 1 to 2 days
What moves the dates

Four things. None of them are hard, but the site cannot finish without them, and each one that lands late pushes launch by the same amount.

1. Your pick

A letter, this week. Nothing starts until this lands.

2. Tai's originals

Full resolution files, not phone photos of the canvases. Needed for any direction, critical for E.

3. The Square decision

Who builds the online store, and whether you ship. This shapes the whole shop section.

4. Domain access

halehakumaui.com is already yours at Domain.com. We need to add one record on launch day. This is the most common reason a launch slips.
